First, let me say, I am not a Whittle descendant or not that I am aware.According to family records, my great-grandmother was Nancy Ann Mashburn who married J. J. E. (Joseph) Slade in 1874 in Gadsden County, Florida.
In researching Nancy, I think she is in the household with Samuel Mashburn age 77 in the 1870 Gadsden County Census. In the same household are:Lemanthy Whitte (not spelled Whittle) age 47 keeping house born in Georgia, Nancy Mashburn age 18 born in Florida, and Laura Mashburn age 12.
According to some Lambert and Slade family members, Nancy and Laura were first cousins.Laura's parents were John Thomas Mashburn and Mary "Elizabeth" Culverson.Lauramarried Francis "Marion" Lambert in 1890 in Decatur County, Georgia.I am also related to Laura B. Mashburn through her grandmother, Mary Polly Wilcox Culverson Dalton. My direct ancestors were Mary Frances Dalton and Benjamin L. Lambert, younger brother of Francis "Marion" Lambert.
Nancy Ann Mashburn Slade age 27 and Joseph Slade age 31 are listed in the 1880 Gadsden County Census. In the same household are:Ada Elizabeth Slade age 4, Arthur Slade age 1, and mother-in-law Caroline Whittle age 58 born in Georgia.I know for a fact this is the correct Nancy Ann Mashburn Slade. Nancy and Joseph had two more children.Carrie was born June 25, 1880, and Mary was born October 17, 1882.Carrie married Wesley "Adam" Lambert, a younger brother to Benjamin L. Lambert.
Could these two women (Whitte and Whittle) be your Lemanthy C. Mashburn Whittle? If so, on the surface, it appears she was the mother of Nancy Ann Mashburn.Do you by chance know who she was married to prior to becoming a Whittle?Or, do you know if she had children prior to marriage?
