I am hoping to find some kind soul who might be able to do a lookup for a marriage record and a search of the 1885 Florida State census for Sumter and Lake County, Florida for James Clarence Terry, Jr?
James Clarence Terry, Jr may have been married for a second time possibly in Sumter County, FL about 1881. I do not know the bride's name. Family tradition says that they had two daughters but we do know anything about them.
If no one is able to do the look-up, can anyone tell me if the marriage and or census records exist and if it might be worth the trip there to look at them? Has anyone else had any luck with researching this time period?
This is what I know.
James Clarence Terry, Jr. (born 27 Feb 1837 Edgefield Co, SC and died 1913 in Mt. Dora?, Lake Co, FL). He is buried in Confederate section of the Old City Cem, Jacksonville, Duval Co, FL (plat 14, grave #31). James first married on 27 February 1858 to Jane A. (Jennie) Murray (b 18 July 1844, AL and died abt November 1873). Jennie is buried in the Old Fayette Cem, Fayette, Fayette Co, AL.
James moved around a lot. He was living in Fayette Co, AL in 1860, Monroe Co, MS in 1870 and in Sumter Co in the 1880 census (living in a "hotel" with two of his sons, Eugene and James, III).

I don't know where he might have been between 1880 and 1900. Since the 1890 Federal Census no longer exists, I was hoping that someone might be able to find him on the 1885 State census.
James next appears in 1900 in Tavares, Lake Co, FL. He is living alone but the census indicated that he is married and that he has been married for 19 years. It has him as married and not widowed but it is possible that his second wife was no longer alive.
His "Application for Pension" dated 18 April 1906, has him as residing in Tavares, Lake Co, FL; having lived in Florida 30 years and owning no property… ave you any sons or daughters? "yes"; If so, how many, and are they able financially to provide for your support? "three daughters and two sons; they are not"; Are you now living with any of your children? If so, is he or she able to provide for your support? "I have been with one of my daughters, but she is not able provide for me.
Since we know that his two daughters from his first marriage were living someplace other than Lake Co, it appears that a daughter by his second wife may have been living in Tavares, Lake Co, FL in 1906.
His Soldier's Pension Claim dated 23 July 1909, has him as a citizen of Lake Co, FL and that he has resided in Florida continuoiously since March 1874... he owns 10 acres in sect 5 W 20 Range 26 worth $20.00 and has personal property of $150.00
In the 1910 census, he is living in the Soliders Home, Telleyrand Ave, Jacksonville, Duval Co, FL.
I would appreciate any assistance or suggestions that would help me identify James' 2nd wife and their children.
