Bottom Line First:I've found several lead points to find information:
There were 637 Mary's that enlisted into World War II, 129 Mary E. (But, the "E" could have been her middle initial of maiden name, or as many married women did, it was the first initial of her maiden name).Once the CORRECT Mary's maiden name and other names used is found, then more on her records could be researched through the National Archives.
The Social Security Death Index:
Mary E. Kauffman, born 16 Sep 1913, died Dec 1991.Her SSN: 567-26-8789 was issued in California before 1951.(Although her SSN was issued in CA, that doesn't mean she was born there).
If you order the record for Mary, it will show her maiden name and any changes of names on her record. The record "should" show a date that she changed her name to Kauffman.A copy of her original application would show her maiden name and other information AS IT WAS at the time of her application. The computer extract would show the further data.To order:
--the records on the application form:
--To order either the image or computer extract (I'd suggest the computer extract as it is cheaper and should give you all you basically need):
Not much information about Mary, so the search had to include her husband John. When you post, it helps to have the information as known on all of the parties, and the link to the website you discussed also.
Kauffman's buried at Kohlerlawn Cemetery:
John Martin Kauffman, born 1906, died4/17/1979, interment: 4/20/1979.
Mary E. Kauffman, born 9/16/1913, died 12/27/1991, interment 1/7/1992.
Both buried Section OC, Lot 226, Space 2.
Mattie Pearl Kauffman, born 1875, died 1935, interment 6/7/1935, Space 3 of that lot.(I did a very quick search for this person, without success, could have been John's mother?)
--The memorial stone on her grave had to have been ordered through the Veterans Administration.I would suggest contact with them for any verification records they have.Records of the Alsip Chapel may also have records of the request for this stone.I find this was the Robinson-Alsip chapel of the Nampa Christian Church. The church might also have information.
The Social Security Death Index:
John Kauffman, born 15 Feb 1906, died April 1979, "last residence" Boise, Ada County, ID.
There are three family trees posted on John Martin Kauffman.
Birth on 15 Feb 1906 in Nampa, Canyon County, ID.He married Violet Honor Horn on 9 June 1926 in Emmett, Gem County, ID.Violet remarried to Vance Joines (born 1895) on 18 August 1934 in Payette, Payette County, ID.Violet died 4 March 1993 in Emmett, Gem County, ID.
(Note: The Western States Marriage Index did show the marriage of John Martin Kauffman to "Viole" Honor Horn in Gem County in 1926).
---John and Violet had two children: Marjorie Mae, born 1927, died 2 June 1945.Ray Martin (Martin Ray) Kauffman, born 12 July 1929 in Nampa, died 26 July 1999 in Seattle, burial at the Neah Bay Cemetery, Neah Bay, WA.Ray was married to "living" Swann on 8 May 1950 at Neah Bay, WA, and had two sons and four daughters. One daughter was born and died in 1952.
--The tree with the most information was owned by "Reneebecker1"I sent a message to her to read this thread and help if she could.
There is an obituary posted for Ray Martin Kauffman on 30 July 1999 in the Peninsula Daily News, WA.The paper is online, but not his obit.
The King County Assessor Property records showed records for Ray Martin and Fernell Kauffman, 15226 30th Ave S, Seattle, WA.This residence was sold in 2007.The site www.zabasearch.com shows a Fernell Kaufmann's phone number. This is a person living with Fred, born 1926, so the wrong person.
The sister of Fernell, Bessie Ruth Bain:
It shows several sons surviving Bessie that live in Neah BayKevin Groat is found on the www.zabasearch.com .Roger Bain of Neah Bay and Sam Dafoe of Sequim are also. While it is a round-about way to do it.I'd suggest calling one of them and asking about Fernell and Ray Kauffman. If Fernell is still able to discuss her family, she might know the history of Ray's father, John Kauffman and what all she knows about Mary, John's wife.
Based on the scenario, I would "guess" that Mary may have been married to someone before John Kauffman.I would suggest asking not only what they knew about Mary, her last name at marriage, place of marriage, and also if she had been married before.
The other person posted:
"A Mary E. Kauffman lived in Meridian, Ada Co., Idaho from 1935-93."
The database with that record is the US Public Records 1950-1993:
Mary Kauffman, born 16 Sep 1913, lived at 700 E. Fairview Ave, Trlr 111, Meridian, ID 83642.There were 903 persons living at that address between 1950 and 1993.There was a Robert K. Garrison, also at site "Trlr 111," but the database doesn't identify his date of birth, or the year he resided there.
--There is NO record of what year she may have lived at that address.
