I'm looking for information on William Charles Damme (b. April 28, 1884 in Dresden, Germany; d. Feb. 6, 1903 in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon) who married Capitola Thorp (b. Nov. 23, 1860 in Elkhorn, IA; d. Aug. 22, 1899 in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon).
Anna Mae Demme (they changed the name to Demme from Damme because Damme sounded like "damn me" and the kids got teased at school a lot) was one of their children and my great grandmother. She was born in Pocatello, Bannock Co., Idaho on April 26, 1884.
So I know that Anna's parents, Williams Charles Damme and Capitola Thorp, were in Pocatello in 1884 at least.I don't have much information on where William Charles Damme went between the time he was 6 years old and he came over on the ship Bremen from Germany to NY with the destination of St. Louis, MO, on Feb. 28, 1859 and the next time I find him in Pocatello, Bannock Co., Idaho in 1884.Any help tracking this tricky ancestor would be greatly appreciated!
(P.S. The ship Bremen's manifest lists Heinrich Damme and Louisa Graf as the couple accompanying little William Charles Damme on the boat. However, Heinrich Damme's will in St. Louis does not list William Charles Damme as one of his children. Therefore, I suspect that William Charles Damme may be a relative of some kind.Perhaps he was an orphan in Germany and relatives brought him over to America?Any ideas?
