Hi Ruth, Your info is just too interesting to not try finding a match between our families. I have been reading your SLY family information.
I don't have much info on my ggggrandparent William Sly. But, I do have SLY descendants who have lived in north Idaho, eastern Washington since the 1890s myself.
It is also uncanny that some of the Sly family (my paternal side) may have come from the same area as my maternal grandparents. It truly is a small world. This is one really good thing about the internet explosion--meeting lost relatives we would never have known and/or never have known our own beginnings in such wonderful detail.
My gg grandmother Rebecca Sly lived in Kilmarnock, Ontario Canada; she was married to James Maitland Sr. My grandfather Frederick Maitland was her grandson from her youngest son James Maitland Jr. Fred was born in Kilmarnock, Ontario, but came to Spokane, Washington, soon after 1877 to work in a relative's livery stable there.
So it crossed my mind that perhaps that relative was a Sly descendant. My Uncle George Maitland told me this a few months before his death at age 94 in April 1999. He couldn't recall the relative's name. My Maitland side is Scottish heritage I would say and my Lawson family heritage is Dutch from Ransselaerwyck (poor spelling) NY.
This is a long shot I know. But the close physical location of your Sly family and my Maitland and Lawson families was too much to just let it slide.
Please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you feel I may be able to help you in your search in some way or if you can provide me with some interesting information. I live 35 miles from Benewah County, Idaho.
