The 1900 Census for Wood, Wright County, Missouri Shows Nelson Reed, Lodger, born March 1883, age 17, born in Missouri, living with John L and Sarah F Scarborough. The family above is Samuel Scarborough and family his sister, Louisa Reed, born Aug 1829 in North Carolina is living with them.
This person does match the age criteria of the James N. Reed found in Idaho.BUT, I have seen little proof that this is the same person.I've been doing genealogy for over 20 years in a hard research manner.I've also a background career in Federal Investigations. While the two match some criteria, there are SOOOO many potential differences."Your" person "Could" have died in Missouri, as a "Nelson Reed".
You may have the full background for this person, but, as an investigator, you must start with each crime scene. If you can go from birth records, to include full name of James Nelson Reed, to John Scarborough in 1900.Then you must prove this is the same person in Idaho by marriage records, by city directory records, by other means. Then, the search becomes difficult; BUT, it then still remains in Idaho to prove or disprove.
Sorry I can't help any further.I and the other "researcher" are in Washington State.
