Hmmm... well the NC debate goes on.I think I do have solid proof that Susannah Wyman at least was born there.I have found her parents, Henry Wyman and Caty aka Catherine Kern, marriage bond there in Rowan Co.
I also have somewhere an account that I found of their journey to Indiana.I will search my stuff and see if I can find that.If memory serves, Henry Wyman earned a land bounty from his service in the Revolutionary War.He was a Hessian soldier (mercenary) for the British that was captured by the revolutionaries and was given the choice of death or freedom if he would join the militia. He did and served under Washington. The account that I have, and I'm going from memory here, states that they left NC around 1800 with a number of other families (I'll have to dig out those names) and it took them something like 3 years to reach Indiana.Again, I need to dig out this story to verify the dates, places and names.
As for William, I have done some digging without any real luck. The 1850 census states that he was born in VA and then he's gone by 1860 so no real way to verify this.I have a copy of his will and it doesn't offer any clues as to siblings, only contains some children's names and their spouses and children.
I do suspect that my Fields and either the Brooks or the Wymans (or both) have some sort of connection in NC.I know that my Fields came from NC but haven't been able to pinpoint just where yet. They appear to have come to Illinois through Clay Co. and settling in Jasper Co., which suggests to me that they came through Indiana since both are near that border. The only records I find of them in Clay Co. are an 1838 land patent in Jasper Co. on which John B. Fields states he is a resident of Clay Co., and then Edmond Fields (my gg-grandfather and son of John B. Fields) marriage in Clay Co. to Lucy Ann Brooks in 1856.On the 1840, 1850, and 1860 census they were in Jasper Co.So, that suggests to me that Edmond and Lucy Ann weren't neighbors or knew each other from church or whatever. There has to be some family connection dating back there to make him marry a girl from another county.IMHO, of course.
Anyway, any clues you can offer would be much appreciated.
