I knew a Charlene Goings.Went to school with her but I can't remember much about her. She was a few grades ahead of me.We went to a one room school house. It could be that she was out of school in a short time after she had gone there. They lived over on another road that lead into Clay City.We did not have to go by their house to get to town.
She may have been the same girl that married a Raley who was a relative but lived further out of Clay City.I do not remember the names of the parents. An earlier ancester married a Davis Foster. She was Vesta Ann Raley daughter of John Robert Raley & Catherine. In about 1850 they packed up and headed west again! They settled in Linn co, KS.I have seen where some other families did the same but they returned to Clay Co.Suppose the reason for moving on was the land but I do not really know and I have not heard family folklore either about this.In fact the 2nd wife of a great uncle, Charles O. Raley's family had moved to Kansas but returned to the Effingham area.My guncle met her and married her.She was an Evelyn Powell.
I see the Foster line spelled many ways.
My line connects to the Foster line thru a John Shepherd & Frances Foster. They had three daughters, Elizabeth, Sarah Ann, & Susannah, married three Raley men, James, John JR, & William Raley. The native American line comes in thru Frances Foster we think. This is early history that we have learned in the last few years.Even more recent I have been in touch with a Tracy Gaskins whose father has a family bible that tells that my Raleys left NC abt two years before the Gaskins. They met there and lived in that area for 20 years before forging on to IL.The Gaskins settled in Saline Co, IL and my Raley settled in Clay Co, IL. It would be interesting to learn why the Raleys went further.
What makes this more interesting isa that James Raley & Sarah Ann Shepherd had five children.,The last two were twins, James & John born Mar 1848. Later in life these twins moved on to Saline Co, IL.Always wondered why they struct out on their own so far away when the only transpor- Learned about two months ago that there was a Robert Shepherd who a brother to the three Shepherd womenlived in Saline Co, IL. A Cora Raley daughter of a John Robert Rale from Clay Co, IL, and a distant cousin married Robert Gaskins from Saline Co, IL, and the other twin, John married a Rachel Gaskins who was a sister to Robert who had married Cora. It has beeen an enlightening trip!
To top this off John Robert Raley SR & Catherine plus Vesta Ann & Davis Foster, and Sanford & Marion packed up and headed west again to Linn Co, Ks. They died there.
Maybe you can fill me in on more Clay City history.I have never found anyone else doing genealogy from Clay Co that I could correspond with and acknowledge knowing someone from there.
