I'm seeking information about my gggreatgrandfather Rev. WILLIAM J. CODER and his son DAVID J. CODER, my ggreatgrandfather. Rev. WILLIAM J. CODER, a Methodist Episcopal minister and physician was born about 1785. Around 1838 he, along with a group of neighbors and family members, went west from Pennsylvania to Havana and Sherman Townships, Tazewell County [later Mason County], Illinois. The History of Menard and Mason Counties, Illinois (1879) says of William: "The first practitioner of the healing art was William Coder, who had settled in the eastern part of Havana Township in 1838.He was a minister of some reputation as well as a physician, and sought by his labors to heal spiritual as well as physical infirmities." In 1838 William bought 80 acres of federal land east of Havana. William and his wife (name unknown) had seven sons: DAVID J. CODERb. 12 August 1812, Luzerne County,PA GEORGE H. CODER b. 10 June 1814 PA WILLIAM CODER ROBERT CODER ELISHA THOMAS CODER b. 1820 PA NELSON H. CODER b. about 1822, d. 17 July 1840, Mason (then Tazewell) County, IL. And one son whose name is unknown to me. William died on 15 December 1841, in Mason County. His estate was administered in April of 1842 by his neighbors ROBERT FAULKNER, THOMAS K. FAULKNER, and WILLIAM HIBBS. One of William’s sons, DAVID J. CODER on 22 April 1841 in Mason County married (MARY) ELIZABETH FAULKNER b.1 September 1819, Hamilton County, OH. [Elizabeth was probably the daughter of ROBERT FAULKNER, a neighbor of William Coder.] They were married by L.W. Moreland, a Methodist preacher. According to a written statement David made in 1892 their marriage license was the first issued in Mason County. David and Elizabeth had 2 sons: HARRISON CODER b.1841 and ROBERT CODER b.15 January 1845 in Mason County before moving to Indiana. William's son ELISHA THOMAS (or ELISHA B.) CODER, a physician, married ELIZA WILLARD FAULKNER (probably the daughter of THOMAS K. FAULKNER and PHEBE HEATON/KEATON) on 6 January 1845 in Mason County, IL. Elisha and Eliza settled in Logan County, Illinois. Any help would be greatly appreciated. William J. Coder is my brick wall.
