Sherry- Thank for your reply!I actually do have a little info on your James MILLER, though I don't know where most of it came from.I confess I can be sloppy keeping track of sources for lines that I'm not positive are my own.
James MILLER -m- Sarah BROWN children: 1.)Anderson MILLER b.18 Feb 1832 in IL; d.1887; -m- 19 March 1859 Menard Co, IL to Mary A. ERVINE (or) IRWIN b.16 March 1842. 2.)Minerva MILLER b.31 Aug 1842 in IL; d.1 July 1900 in Wilson Co, KS; -m- 3 Jan 1864 in Petersburg, Menard Co, IL to Richard James CLARY b.12 Aug 1842
That's all I had in my d-base, but it's only a start. You're catching me at a good time because I just finished going through a stack of probate files from Menard Co. as well as making my own property map in hopes of determining where the various MILLER families settled in Menard Co.
According to the location given in the 1860 Mortality Schedule, James MILLER lived in Petersburg or possibly in the northeast corner of Tallula. This does separate him a little from the majority of the MILLER families in my posting but that does not mean he is not still connected to them. There always seems to be that one son who has to settle "on the other side of the mountain" for whatever reason.
The IL state land d-base only shows a James MILLER in Twp.17, Range 8 and Range 7.This James would be in Tallula.I double-checked to make sure your numbers weren't transposed from the Mortality Schedule and you're right: it says Twp 18, Range 7.As far as I know, there were only two MILLER families in that Twp. and Range at the time:
George G. MILLER b.abt 1800; d.March 1842.He married Hannah (--------) and had many pieces of land all over Menard Co.George G. & his brother Jesse MILLER operated a ferry in the northern part of Menard Co.I have not been able to pin down their ancestry yet.
John MILLER b.1760-1765 in KY.He married Betsey ANTLE and had 6 children born in KY between 1792 and 1804, including a son James who was b.abt 1796.
Next, I looked your James up in the 1850 census and based on his neighbors at that time, I conclude he was living in Twp 17, Range 6 which is Rock Creek Twp.This makes him almost certainly part of the big cluster of KY MILLER families that settled there and on the other side of the County line (south) in Sangamon Co.
Many of the other members of John MILLER's family (sons, grandsons, son-in-laws, etc.) settled just on the other side of the Twp line and were mainly residents of Rock Creek Twp.Add to that the fact that the land records show a James MILLER owning land in Tallula and the fact that John MILLER owned 3 parcels of land in Twp 18, Range 7, I would make an educated guess that your James is the same person as the son of John MILLER and Betsey ANTLE.
If you would like more info, please e-mail me privately.
In my original posting, the families of Jacob, Moses & Solomon MILLER would all be related to yours. All three were brothers of John MILLER. So much for "not connecting" to any of these families!
