I have a picture of my great-great-great grandfather in his uniform. He served in the 114th from its established until it was mustered out. He enlisted as private and was a sergeant by war's end. His name was Claus Foss (Claas Fass on the rolls). My cousin has the picture on her webpage: http://hometown.aol.com/ckress1737/Foss/Photos.htmlhttp://hometown.aol.com/ckress1737/Foss/Photos.html I can email you a larger version, if you'd like it.
Claus received a couple wounds in the war. One was when a bullet passed through an ear. The other was to one leg, which eventually made him lame, though he was able to be a productive farmer and drive wagon trains for many years.
Oddly enough, he claimed to have left Germany to get away from the wars.
