Looking for any information on the Lewis (or Lance/Lancer/Lannis/Louis depending on the source and your interpretation of the handwriting) DUDLEY family which is listed in the 1860 US Census for Brown County as follows:
Elkhorn Township, Brown County, Illinois Roll M653_157, Page 807, Ancestry Image 141 of 259
Name-Sex-Age-Occupation-Birthplace Lewis DUDLEY-M-28-Cooper-Tennessee Mrs. O. A. -F-25- -Illinois Josephine- F-5- -Illinois M. L. -F-3- -Illinois Infant -M-2/12-Illinois
Mrs. O. A. DUDLEY here is probably the former Orpha Ann REID (daughter of Charles REID?), who is listed in the Illinois Marriage Index as having married Lewis DUDLEY in Brown County, 05/28/1854.
Lewis DUDLEY is probably the son of Nancy CARPENTER and Christopher DUDLEY and is listed in the 1850 US Census living with them in (probably Chambersburg) Pike County, Illinois (Town 3S 2W, Pike County, Illinois, Roll M432_124, Page 42).In this same Pike county census, living just down the street from Christopher Dudley family is Isaac DUDLEY, who is the same age as Lewis, with the same occupation (cooper), and the same birthplace (Tennessee).Isaac married Minerva GREGORY, served in the Union Army, had a pension, and is listed with his family still living in Illinois in 1880 for the US Census.
My questions are these:
Are Lewis and Isaac related?
What happened to the Lewis DUDLEY family after 1860?He does not seem to be listed in any Civil War index.I cannot find him or any of his other family members in the 1880 census.Did he die in the war leaving his wife to remarry?Did they move west and escape further enumeration?(This last is certainly possible, as his brother Spencer moved to Oregon and California, and his sister Casandra moved to New Mexico.)
Thank you for taking the time to consider my query.
