Last Thursday, Samuel Sweet, 56, who was employed by Mrs. Emma Swisegood, 2 1/2 miles northeast of Augusta, met with a frightfull accident that proved fatal . He had gone to the Sam McAfee pasture to haul wood to Augusta when the wagon upset, pinning him under the load of wood, with his face to a tree. When he did not return to the house for dinner, Mrs. Swisegood investegated and found the badly injured man, who remained conscious. When she could not release him, help was summoned and he was taken to the home where he passed aways ten minutes after Dr. Earl Cooper and his nurse arrived. He is survived by three daughters and a son. His wife , the former Mollie J. Hickey of Quincy, and one son, Wm. are deceased. Funeral services and burial were held in Augusta.
Molly Hickey Sweet died in 1902. Samuel Sweet on the 1910 census with a 2nd wife: Dela (Lipe)Sweet, and son George in Quincy. Wahneeta is living separately, with an aunt and uncle (John and Sarah Umphrey should have been spelled HUMPHREY) in Rocky Run, Hancock Co, IL.

Samuel & Mollie Hickey Sweet are my sister-in-law's (Shirley Ann French Proctor) family.
Shirley's father is the George E. Sweet.
How do you connect to the family?
Shirley's mother married George E. French, and she grew up as a French. It was not until many years after they were both gone, she discovered her father was not a "French" but "Sweet". I think it was through a sister of his. He apparently left home at a young age. Joined a carnival and changed his name to French. He remained a "Carnie" man all his life.
Shirley was born in I believe Arizona, where they had to put her mother off the train to give her birth.
When it came time for my sister-in-law to start school her mother remained behind with her mother and sister. With her dad returning when the Carnie season was over.
Shirley (my sister-in-law) her father was George E. Sweet. He left home, Shirley thought when he was quite young, like about 12, and she thought it was because he was unhappy with a stepmother, apparently according to the obituary, there was no stepmother, but it must have been the Mrs. Swisegood. When he left home he joined up with a carnival and Shirley thought he took the last name of French from someone who befriended him in the carnival. Any way he married and had a family under the name of French. Many years later after his death one of his sisters, and I think it was Waunita got in touch with Shirley's mother and told her the story. Said she didn't get in touch with her sooner because she didn't want to tell the story unitl George had passed away as that was the way he wanted it.
So Shlirley would be let's see your mother's or who evers 1st cousin once removed I never can get relationships straight.
Shirley is 80 years old, but still going has some health problems with her heart has always been a very social person, likes to entertain and has many friends.
I know nothing more nor does she about the Sweet family, and nothing about the French family whose name he took.
He never went back home as I understand it.
George is Mary Hutchison and Samuel Sweets son.
In researching my sister-in-laws family, she has a James Hickey b. abt 1840, according to family history born in Dublin Ireland. He married a Henrietta/Catherine McNutt also said to be born in Dublin Ireland. They both died in Quincy Adams Illinois. A child, a daughter Mary Jane Hickey b. abt 1869 in Missouri married Samuel Sweet in Quincy Il They both died there.

We are from a different James and Catherine Hickey of Quincy, IL, and I've never found a connection to your Hickeys, though I've seen refs to them. Ours were born in NY much earlier than your Hickeys(though it would be neat if they were all the same family from Ireland way way back.)
This was a reply to LAUREL from SUSAN concerning Samuel Sweet's wife Mary "Mollie" HICKEY's line:
I'm researching Hickeys of Adams County and have just connected our family to the Sweets of Adams County. I'm eager to share Hickey info and compare notes with people researching this family group.
Have read the 2003 Sweet postings and census data, etc.
Thanks! S Stemont

There may be some confusion here. The Charles Sweet listed in the census info posted was born 11 FEB 1837 in Huron County OHIO. He served in the Seventh Regiment of Cavalry Missouri Volunteers. He was married to Eliza Jane Rice and lived in Adair County Missouri from 1865 til his death in August 1902. His Civil War pension papers from the National Archives mentioned Mary Hutchinson but I wonder if her Charles Sweet was maybe someone else. My Charles was discharged for disability in Feb 1863 and doubtful he enlisted again several months later. Mary Koch whose message was looking for someone who was in an entirely different unit. I don't know if this info has been wrong all along. My Charles was a brother to the Abner Sweet of Missouri that is in the recent messages. Maybe some headway is being made.
1800 or 1810 Rensselaer County NY Sweet's. The Charles Sweet I responded to earlier was my gg-grandfather, his father Benjamin born about 1807-1810 in Stephentown, NY after 1860 went to Armourdale, Wyandotte County, KS. Benjamin's father to be determined.
My GGG Grandfather(Benjamin Sweet)was in Augusta, Hancock County, IL prior to the 1860 U.S.Census, the family moved there from Huron County Ohio where they had been from the 1830's. GG grandfather Charles Sweet settled in Adair County, MO. Have you had any info sent your way on Benjamin Sweet born about 1809 probably in NY. He is likely buried in the Pulaski Cemetery.
Charles Sweet from Hancock County, IL was my GG grandfather by his wife in Adair County, MO Eliza Jane RICE. Mary Hutchinson was mentioned in his Civil War Pension papers available through the National Archives. I believe he was born in Huron County, Ohio in Feb. 1837. I did not know he had children in Hancock County, IL and don't know what happened between him and Mary.
