I did a quick check of cemetery records, and found the following regarding the Thorp's.The first stone was listed as broken, and appears to have contained two names and dates:
John Thorp, died (month?) 23, 1864(?) (Name?) Thorp, died May 2, 1863(?), Age 74 yrs, 10 months, 22 days
2nd stone - M. L. Thorp, Oct. 8, 1824 - Nov. 3, 1898
These markers are in Section M of Center Grove Cemetery, East/Southeast of the Civil War cannon.Center Grove Cemetery lies on the Northwest side of Kirkwood, Warren County in Tompkins Township.Kirkwood had also been known as Young America, and Lyndon before that.
I didn't find the Burnett's in the 1870 census or in Warren County cemetery records.Death records didn't begin until 1878 in Warren County, and some people didn't bother with those until the law became more rigid in 1916.One thought - there was a state census in 1865 that may or may not list them. Our state census records, where available, were similar to the 1840 US Census - not much information given, but proof that they were there.
There are also some church records available from that era for a few of the area churches.Would you have any idea as to their possible affiliation? There might be a chance that they were mentioned in the local papers. Was there something specific you were searching for?
