This is an update to previous entries (Burkett forum)
on Membrance William Burkett. Recently it was
discovered that Membrance and a James W. Burkett witnessed
the will of William H. Garrett in White County, Illinois
in 1832. John Chisum was the executor. The wife
was Sally Garrett and the children were Fanny and
Does anyone know anything about these Burketts or
have additional White Co., Illinois information which
I unfortunately don't have access to? James W. Burkett
does appear on the 1830 White Co., Illinois census and
appears to have been a brother to Membrance. Membrance
was born about 1810 in Tennessee.

On the Greene Co. Tax lists, Membrance Burkett went by "M. W. Burkett".
On the 1850 Jackson Co., Census, he went by "William Burket".
On the 1860 Jackson Co., Census, he went by "M. W. Burkett".
On the 1870 Jackson Co., Census, he went by "Membrance W. Burkett".
On a few Jackson Co., Deeds, he either went by "M. W. Burkett"
or "Membrance W. Burkett"
A Burkett daughter, Frances Blansett, named a son Membrance Blansett.
There may be a connection to the Stephen and Rebecca White family.
Membrance and Melinda Burkett had two children named Stephen and
Rebecca. The White family were only a couple of households away
from the Burketts in the 1850 census. The Whites were in Marion
Co., Ark. in 1860. I believe Miles Blansett, who married Frances
Burkett, took out a land patent in 1860 in the area of Marion/Baxter
County. Stephen White was the son of Daniel and Martha (Nelms) White
of Williamson Co., Tenn. They came from Edgecombe Co., NC and appear
to be connected to other White families that carry the given name
"Meady". There are other Whites around in Jackson Co. that were probably
related (sons?) to Stephen. In the 1870 Jackson Co. census, Membrance
Burkett and his daughter Frances Blansett Weeks each have a teenage
White girl in their household.
The Burketts were up in Illinois with families such as the Whites,
McCrackens, and Blansetts. Elijah Blansett and the McCrackens were
in Wayne Co., Ill in 1830. Members of the White family (not Stephen)
and a James Burkett appear in White county, Ill. A William Birkett
(50-60 year age) shows up in Edwards Co. All three counties neighbor
each other. There are marriage records for the McCrackens in Edwards
Co. There is a marriage rec for a William Birket to Mary Ann Kershaw,
8 Jan. 1829 in Edwards Co.
The McCrackens came to Arkansas in the 1830's and settled in the
area in what is now Craighead Co. Elijah Blansett also came down in
the late 1830's, married his second wife, Ann (Yokum)
Smith in Independence Co.,
Arkansas before settling in Jackson Co., Ark. Membrance Burkett and
Stephen White do not show up in Arkansas until the 1843 Greene Co.,
Arkansas Tax list. I believe the name "Meady White" also shows up on
the tax list. It also appears by the birthplace of Membrance's
children that the Burketts left Illinois, went to Miss/Tenn for a
few years before going to Arkansas.
