I've been interested in a William Henry Moore born about 1847 KY, who went to TX, and Indian Territory (OK).One descendant reported that he was from Logan Co. KY.In the process of searching for him, I came across another William H. Moore of the same age in Logan Co., and this is what I found about him, his mother, and siblings. I hope it is helpful to someone:
This household on the 1850 census of Dist. 2, Logan Co.: Sarah Moore 45 KY Charles20 KY Farmer Hiram19 KY Mary14 KY James13 KY Sarah11 KY George8 KY Susan4 KY Elizabeth2KY
Note that the mother Sarah is old enough to also have been the mother of William Moore Sr. of the same district, born ca 1825: 1850 census Dist. 2, Logan Co., KY: William Moore25 KYFarmer Hanna26 KY William4 KY James2 KY
I haven't determined Sarah's husband.Assuming he was a bit older, say 45, and that William Sr was a son, then working back to the 1840 census, we're looking for an 1840 Mr. (--?--) Moore household with this approximate makeup: ____ Moore 1110001-300001 Unfortunately there was no such household in Logan Co. in 1840, but we know the family was somewhere in KY as early as 1830.
Apparently the mother Sarah, and sons William Sr, Hiram, and James all migrated to White Co., IL before 1860.
In 1860 census of Twp. 6, White Co., IL: Sarah Crafton60 KYFarmer George Moore 18 KYFarmer Sarah20 KY Susan14 KY Elizabeth12 KY (Apparently Sarah md a Mr. Crafton before 1860 and he also was gone at the start of the war.Couldn't find the marriage record in Illinois. Maybe she reverted to a mauden name. There were several Craftons living in Dist. 2 of Logan Co., KY in 1850 but all considerably younger than Sarah.Sarah was listed as Sallie Crofton on the 1870 census of Indian Creek, White Co. and living with Robert and Elizabeth Yates - her daughter Elizabeth had married Robert Yates.Curiously, her birthplace is shown as IL on that 1870 census.)
1860 census Twp. 6, White Co., IL: William Moore37 KYFarmer Hannah38 KY Wm H.14 KY Jas M.12 KY(md Susannah Wingate 5 Feb 1868 White Co.) Nancy E.8 KY(md Henry Holderby 29 Apr 1869 White Co.)
Aside:One researcher reported a William Hummer Moore born 20 Mar 1825 Logan Co., KY, who died 10 Feb 1905 Simpson Co. KY, with no other info.Digging a bit, the 1900 census of Simpson Co. lists a William Hess Moore b Mar 1825 KY with wife Nancy age 45 b KY.It says they had been married 15 years. This William was there on the 1880 census and Nancy was then a servant. His household was listed there also in 1870 with wife Sarah and several children including a son William H. age 16 (so born abt 1854).That eliminates him from being the William who md Hannah and went to IL.)
1870 census Carmi, White Co., IL: James Moore 21 KYCommon laborer Susana19 IN Orilla3 IL Renard1 IL Hannah50 KY Wonder what happened to William Sr and William Jr during the Civil War.Couldn't find any William Moores from White Co. who served.Henry Holderby of Carmi, White Co. served as a Pvt in Co. E 13nth IL US Cavalry CON.Mustered out 1865 at Pine Bluff, AR.I'm not sure what that CON means.Maybe Conscripted.Apparently Henry Holderby made it back to White Co. and appears there on the 1880 census, age 31 born IL boarding with a family. With him is a Sarah A. Holderby age 35 born IL.Not clear what happened to Nancy E. (Moore). However, there is a White Co. marriage record for a Nancy Ellen Moore and James William H. Terry on 27 Aug 1898.
Also on the 1870 Carmi, White Co., IL census. These were adjacent households so were probably closely related: 1870: Hiram Moore38 KYFarmer Betsey34 IL James15 IL Jeremiah13 IL Silas7 IL Susan5 IL Winnie8/12 IL(born Oct.) (Hiram, Elizabeth, and son James were on the 1860 census of White Co., but son Jeremiah wasn't listed.Nearby in 1870 was the household of James and Sarah Moore.)
1870: James Moore 35 KY Farmer Sarah40 KY George12 IL Hiram8 IL (George wasn't listed in the household on the 1860 census of White Co.)
1870: William Moore 24KY Farm laborer Georg Ann21 GA
William H. Collins14 IL (adopted daughter) This household was enumerated next to that of an older John and Sarah Moore of NC, who turn out to be parents of Georgianna.
