I am trying to unravel and follow the Craig's that lived in Butler County, Ohio from 1810-1830 and the Craig's that ended up in Montgomery County, Indiana from 1825 on. My ancestors were William James Henry (1784 PA-1862 Montgomery, IN) and his wife Nancy Craig (born abt 1795 died before 1820 in Butler County, Ohio) through their son Joseph S Henry (1816 OH-1884 IN). I am trying to determine who the parents were for Nancy Craig.
William Henry and Nancy Craig were married 21 Mar 1816 in Butler County, Ohio, presumably in Lemon Township because they were married by William Harvey Esq., a justice of the peace of Lemon Township.William Henry was married a second time to a Nancy Wilson on 1 Jun 1820 in Butler County, Ohio by the same William Harvey, Esq.. Note though that according to "A History and Biographical Cyclopaedia of Butler County, Ohio", William Henry may have been the Justice of the Peace mentioned in 1835 for Wayne, Butler, Ohio too. The two towns were right next to each other. It was his second wife Nancy Wilson that moved with William Henry and family to Montgomery County, IN between 1835-1840.
In the 1820 census, there seems to be two different sets of Craig's living in Butler County, OH. Those that were related to John Craig 1762 NJ-1840 OH and William Craig (not traced yet) in Wayne, Butler, Ohio and those in Lemon/Middletown, Butler, Ohio: Thomas (b. 1761-1770), Robert (b. abt 1775), & David Craig (1790 PA-1853 Montgomery County, IN).
I am assuming that my Nancy Craig is related to the Lemon Twp Craig's simply by the Reverend that married her and the fact that David Craig ended up moving to Montgomery County, Indiana before 1830, which is where my William James Henry ended up. Also note that most of the children related to John Craig were married by Reverends vs Justices of the Peace. It would also make more sense that her parents were from PA vs. NJ because there seems to be a connection to my Galbraith line that went from Chester/Lancaster PA to VA to Washington/Carter County, TN to Decatur/Bartholomew, IN.
Unfortunately, I haven't determined where Robert and Thomas Craig came from (but right now I am presuming PA and later Washington County, TN), nor have I determined the father for David Craig. I have seen 3 different fathers for David Craig online so far, including the John Craig of NJ/Wayne, Butler, Ohio (findagrave). David Craig was married to Jemima Masterson on 5 Nov 1812 in Butler Co, OH by Daniel Strickland, Esq. believed to be from Madison Twp, Butler, OH.
What also makes things interesting is that David Craig lived next to a Robert H Craig in 1830 in Montgomery County, IN. Robert H Craig (b 1761-1769 South Carolina d 18 Dec 1849 Union City, Montgomery, IN) lived in Harrison County, KY from abt 1800 through 1820 before moving to to Montgomery, IN. Were they related? Robert H Craig had two other brothers named James McCoy Craig (1770 SC-KY?) and William Craig (1777 SC-1828 IN). So there are three groups of Craig's in two locations (OH, IN) originally from NJ, PA, SC.
Has anyone out there figured this out or followed the Thomas and Robert Craig Families from Butler Co, OH to know where they came from or went?
