Cornelius was a partner in Bye & Paddleford, Dealers in Boots, Shoes and Groceries on Sale Street, Tuscola. He was active in the Masonic Lodge and a charter member of the Knights of Honor Lodge, instituted April 1878. Cornelius was Treasurer. The object of the lodge was "mutual aid, assistance and improvement, and co-operative life insurance of $2000."
