The name here is consistently spelled POTTORFF.It is German in origin, and a generation back was spelled BOTTORFF.Some descendant lines kept the old spelling, others changed it many ways--think some in Iowa at least prounounced it "Put-off."Eliphalet Sylvester Pottorff was b. 21 Mar. 1824, Clark Co., Indiana.His parents were George Pottorff (14 Apr. 1778-20 July 1850) and Nancy Phillips (10 July 1786-28 Oct. 1873).These parents married 21 Apr. 1802, Jefferson Co., KY (Louisville).Clark Co. Indiana is just across the river.Family moved into Bartholomew Co. Indiana in 1830s.George Pottorff is buried at Burnsville Christian Church, near the rear and to the left of the church.There is an eroded fieldstone next to his marker, probably his wife Nancy.She went to Davis Co., Iowa, listed there on census in 1860; but returned to Indiana, in Bartholomew Co. on 1870 census.
