We just recently visited the Old Union/Sugar Creek Baptist Church in Reeve Twp., Daviess County, Indiana. It was a site to behold. The church is now in a great state of decay, but still stands as regal as ever.If you decide to visit, bring lots of film and have plenty of time to visit. The church is not active, but we were able to visit the inside.Beware of the lefthand side of the back of the church. It slopes downward. On the altar was a nice setup. There was a picture drawn in 1985 of the church, and a few words were written about the church's history.
It was equally as nice to visit the graveyard out back.Someone has recently cleaned up the area, and most of the stones are in good shape. We were a little worried for it was deer hunting season, and we could hear the rifles ring out in the background. Some of the surnames that we ran into were:Allen, Buzan, Brown, White, Baker, Boston, Padgett, Arvin, Swing, Rodgers, Jackman, McCord, Hedrick, Burroughs, Gilley, Gould, Gold, Clements, Cannon, Edwards, Hyzer, Zumwalt, Kelso, Ham, Gootee, Harbison/Hardison, Chandler, Risley, Summers, Potts, Canary, Harker, Scales, Heffernan, Patrick, Farley, Bauer, Hoffman, Swickard, Harris, Yoakum, Robinson, Burris, Taylor, Hagerty, Blagrave, Raney, Butler, Watkins, Young, and many more.
Directions to this church and cemetery:Take Highway 231 North.Take a left on county road 162.There will be a green sign stating that Alfordsville is 4 miles.Go a few miles, a very small road with lots of hills.Road takes a natural left.It helps to follow the Alfordsville Assembly of God Signs. These signs have big red arrows on them, and is on the very same way to Old Union/Sugar Creekj Baptist Church.Take left, wind down through town. There is a "T" in the road, go right.Do not go on the Dirt Road.Turn right on road 700S, Turn left at road 1125 E.Church is on the right. There is an Historical marker right out in front of the church.
This was a very nice genealogical experience, and I suggest that some of the Daviess County Genealogists give it a visit one day.Just thought we would share our experiences.Have a great Holiday Season!
