Since I posted my first query, I have learned more about James D. Rider. He was married to Ann (maiden name unknown) while still in England. They immigrated to the U.S. in 1849 with their son, Thomas. After arriving in the U.S., two more sons were born (James D., b. 5 Jul 1855 and John Botterill, b. abt 1857, both born in Indiana).
Some time between 1857 and 1860, Ann died and James remarried Lucinda List.James and Lucinda had at least 4 children, 2 of whom died before 1900.The other two children were girls (Sarah E. or "Sallie" b. 20 Mar 1861 and Nellie Jane, b. 28 Dec 1963).
Back to the sons born to James D. and Ann.
After their mother died, James Jr. and John Botterill returned to England.I have found them listed in the 1871 England census in Yorkshire.James remained in England and married Maria C. Delbridge. This is the line that you have written about.John came back to the U.S., married, and had several children.I'll send you information about that line off-list.
What I am particularly interested in is the name "Botterill."I am speculating that Botterill is Ann's maiden name.I began researching this family because my neighbor (who is descended from Lucinda List) has in her possession a cross-stitch sampler that was done by Elsabeth Botterills in 1815.I am hoping that somehow, the John Botterill in this family links to the Elsabeth Botterills who sewed the sampler.
