My GGG Grandmother's name is Elizabeth Whitsell/Weitzel born in Pennsylvania 1796-1800. She shows up in Indiana marrying an Enoch Jackson as Elizabeth Hardesy on March 8, 1827 in Dearborn County, IN. She later as Elizabeth Jackson marries Orin Judd in Dearborn County, IN on May 21, 1844. Orin dies shortly thereafter (and he is buried beside his first wife) and she retains the last name of Judd to her death, sometime after 1870.
Elizabeth has two sons by Enoch Jackson, Andrew Jackson, and James Jackson. James' third marriage application shows his mother's name as "Elizabeth Whitsell" born in "PA".
Elizabeth is listed in the biography of Levi P. Holston of Clay County, Indiana, published 1909 (listed as Hardesty in error):
Quote from the biography
"Enoch Jackson lived in Dearborn county until after his marriage to Elizabeth Hardesty, when he bought land in Decatur county, and was subsequently engaged in its improvement until his death, at the age of three score and ten years. His wife, who was born in Pennsylvania, of German ancestors survived him, and died at the home of a son in Perry township."
Whitsell/Weitzel is German, but Hardesty is not, therefore I know Whitsell is the correct last name.
I have not found the earlier marriage of Elizabeth Whitsell to a Hardesty (the only way she could have had that last name when marrying Enoch Jackson). It does not show up in pre 1850 marriages of Indiana; it most likely occurred in Pennsylvania. I feel if I could ever find this marriage it would lead me to her parents names. However, if anyone knows anything about this Elizabeth I would be happy to hear from you. I have no idea where in PA she was born; no records I have found state anything but PA. No city name.
Elizabeth was 50 on the 1850 census; 70 on the 1860 census and 74 on the 1870 census. I did not find her on the 1880. She most likely was born 1796 in Pennsylvania; I think the 1860 census must be wrong and she made herself younger on the 1850.
