Quoting from the William Fitgerald/Jarrell Family by Mabel Grimes Huck
William Fitzgerald's Revolutionary War Pension application states that he enlisted as a private in Newtown, Chester, Maryland (Newton Township, Chester county was in the part of Pennsylvania that was claimed by Maryland until the Mason and the Dixon survey was completed in 1767.Since he was 74 years old when he applied for the pension he may have been thinking of those years before Mason-Dixon finalized the Pennsylvania-Maryland border dispute).
William says he joined the 2nd regiment of the Maryland state troops , becoming a substitute for Risdom Bosman. He was in the battle of Hobkirk's Hill, the siege of Ninety-Six, and Eutaw Springs., finally being stationed on James Island until the war ended.Apparently his only battle injury was an elbow wound.
When he came to Guilford county North Carolina is unknown but he bought 30 acres from John Thompson in Guilford county on 6 Mar 1788. His name is given as Wm. Fitz Garrel, planter and his land was on the waters of South Buffalo, bordering Adam Lackey and Jesse Weatherly.
The 1790 census of Guilford county show Wm, Fitzgeral with one white male over 16, one white male under 16, and two white females. On 21 Jun 1791 Wm. Fitzgeral sold his 30 acres back to John Thompson (Guilford deeds 5:504).The records do not show him receiving any other land until 17 Dec 1794, when William Jarrell was granted 77 acres on the waters of Brushy Fork by the State of North Carolina.
In a deed dated 5 march 1823 William F. Jarrell sold 51 acres on the waters of Brushy Fork to Salathiel Lamb (Guilford Deeds 17:112).
On 7 dec 1833 William sold 187 acres on the waters of the Allemance to Christopher Fields (Guilford Deeds 23:274).About 1834, William and 2nd wife, Sarah, moved to Indiana along with William's son and daughter-in-law Manliff and Rachael.Charlotte, John, James, Absalom, Anne, and perhaps other children's of Williams's stayed in Guilford and Randolph counties, North Carolina.
His widow Sarah renounced her right to administer his estate on 9 May 1848 and on the same day Thomas Butt, George W. Monks, and Josiah Hutchinson entered in bond as sureties, in regard to William's estate.
According to the History of Randolph County Indiana, Wm. Fitzjerrel was 97 at the time of the 1840 census, which asked if any Revolutionary War Pensioners were living in this household. This would have put his birth date about 1743.William was living in Washington Township at this time. The history goes on to say that he lived to 105 although this may be slightly exaggerated.
Following the readings for the Mount Zion Cemetery is the following note:
W. F. Fitzgerald, 105 yrs old, was killed by falling from a load of oats he had loaded himself. He was strong and sprightly, though so old, and except for this accident, might have survived for years. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
