Anyone researching Philip Grass, born abt. 1810, son of Daniel Grass and Elizabeth Brown who married Lucinda Eckart (b. abt. 1820) in Harrison County, Indiana 7 April 1840. They appear on the 1840 census for Harrison Cty, Indiana and by 1850 are in Shelby Cty, Illinois where they appear on the 1850 and 1860 census. 7 June 1845 Philip purchased land in Fayette Cty, Illinois and on 9 Aug 1853 he purchased land in Shelby Cty, Illinois. Their children all born Illinois were: Mary b. abt. 1841, married Joseph Myers/Meyers 3 Dec 1865 in Effingham County, Illinois. John D. b. abt 1843, married Annie Unknown last census record 1900 John D. is in Labette Cty, Kansas. William H., b. abt 1848 Alfred J., b. abt. 1850 Sarah A. b. abt. 1853 Joseph R., b. abt. 1858
By 1870 Lucinda Eckart Grass disappears from the census records, her son John D. Grass has two of his siblings living with him in 1870, Philip Grass and Joseph Myer/Meyers show to be in jail for murder. Philip's son William H. Grass was involved in the murder and given a sentence of 20 years while Philip was sentenced to Life and Joseph Myer/Meyers was suppose to be hung for his involvement.
