JOHN STANLEY, son of JOEL and BETHENY STANLEY, was born near Bainbridge, Putnam County, Indiana, Sept. l5, l828.He departed this life Feb. 2l, l90l.
MR. STANLEY moved from Indiana to Illinois, from Illinois to Mercer County, Mo., from Mercer County, Mo., to Knoxville, Marion County, Iowa, and from there to Decatur County, Iowa, in l854.
December 25, l850, he was married to MISS LOUISE COOPER; of this union seven children were born, four of whom ar living, three sons and one daughter; J.H. STANLEY, of Kellerton, T.M. STANLEY, of Decatur, DAN W. STANLEY, of Leon, and MRS. HENRY BELLAMY, of Monterey, California.MRS. LOUISE STANLEY departed this life Oct. l6, l868.
MR. STANLEY was married the second time to MRS. ELIZA S. FRENCH, June 26, l869;to this union four children were born, three of whom are living; HOMER STANLEY, of Tuskeego, CHARLES STANLEY, of Decatur and MRS. DELLA BENTON, of Decatur.
MR. STANLEY was converted when eighteen years of age, under the Pastorate of Rev. Snim and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he has been a faithful member until he was removed to the church triumphant.MR. STANLEY took a prominent part in the erection of the first Methodist Episcopal Church in Decatur City and also in the erection of the present building.
He occupied successfully every office in the local church open to a lay member, until infirmities of advancing years, required him to retire from active service in the church.
The funeral services took place at his residence, conducted by his pastor and his remains were laid to rest in the family burying yard in the Decatur City Cemetery, Feb. 22.
