According to the book Joseph Ransford 1762 - 1849 and His Descendants by Ruth Ransford Mason, published in 1988, John was a brother to Benjamin, not a son. On page 12, section 1.1 Elizabeth Medsker, the paragraph reads: "The name Medsker, sometimes spelled Medsaker was originally Metzgar in Germany. I'm not sure how old the girls were when their family came from Pennsylvania but the 2 sisters (Elizabeth and Catherine) turned the head of 2 Ransford brothers (Edward and Samuel) and the 3rd sister Hannah caught the eye of John Harris (uncle of Joel Harris who married Lydia Ransford). This move made a lot of double cousins!" Unfortunately, I don't know where Ruth got her information/documentation.
