I totally agree with you. They have no respect for the cemetaries, the families, the graves, let alone the historical issue. Sullivan county isn't the only one they have done this to. They have done this in Vigo and Clay counties for years. I have family in all three. There are cemetaries that the coal company has gone right up to: yes, they have placed a nice fence around it, but have dug and drilled right up to the edge. I have family stones that through all of this, are now right on the edge of the cemetary property and through water erosion taking the edges away and all the blasting that has knocked them over, are about to fall down into the little creek that they so carefully "created" to "put back the ground" as they like to call it. There is also a cemetary at the top of a pretty steep hill in Clay County that through all of the digging under and blasting, have all but knocked down and broken most of all the older markers and through their "careful" placement of mine shafts under the graves, are now literally caving in because the ground under the caskets are gone. It saddens me to know that someones loved ones were buried there and through all of the digging and settling amd shifting, are now abandoned, forgotten areas that are unsafe to go into. The one I am speaking of now looks unnaturally wavy when you stand and look at them. I know along while back some of the townships tried to fight the coal companies. If you didn't sell out, the coal company went in and took the land anyhow. I spoke with an old man at the Vigo County library a couple of years ago that had to move into an elderly housing unit, because they as he stated "took" his house. They only paid him about 15,000 for a big two-story farm house that was in the middle of nowhere, not hurting anyone. When my father and I were "cemetarying" one weekend, we went past where the house had been, they had gone through and excavated what they wanted and now it's just flat land, that someday, they will sell back to the state, or put up for sale. I'm so sorry for rambling, but it is such a shame and an outrage!!!!
