I am looking for the ancestors or wife of Cole (or Coal or Coleman or Coalman, or some other variation) Anderson. Cole could have been born anytime between 1830 and 1850, perhaps in Kentucky, as his children were. Family history says that Cole died when hit by a train, but we are not sure where--perhaps in Christian County, Kentucky.
Cole may not have been his real given name. It may have been a nickname.
Cole’s wife’s name has been lost to history. She probably died at a relatively young age.
Cole Anderson and his unknown wife had several children. They are:
1.) Fanny Anderson, who was born in May of 1867. Fanny (or Fannie) acted as a surrogate mother to many of her younger siblings because of the absence their mother. She married Sam (or Samuel) Langford.
Fanny and Sam had at least five children:
a.) Katie B Langford, born 1888
b.) Daisy E Langford, born 1892
c.) Jimmie (?) Langford, born 1893
d.) Ora Langford, born 1895
e.) Clyde B Langford, born 1898
f.) Charles, born after 1900
2.) Effie May Anderson, who was born in 1881. She died in 1947. Effie married Zeno Tilden Stokes of Hopkins County, Kentucky. Effie and Zeno had two children:
a.) Berrenious (aka, Bee or Bea) May Stokes, born 1899. She married first William McCullaugh, then James Albert Wyman. Bea had no children.
b.) Sherman Hayes Stokes, born in 1902, died in 1952. Sherman married Elizabeth Jane Robbins, who was born in 1904. Sherman and Elizabeth had two children:
i.) Jack Tilden Stokes, born 1923. Jack married Bettie Mae Johnson, born in 1928. Jack and Bettie are my parents.
ii.) Billy Joe Stokes, born in 1925. Bill married Charlotte Lyman (known as “Jackie”).
iii.) Charles Robert (Bob) Stokes, born in 1929. Bob married Josephine (known as “Joe”).
3.) James Wells (Jim Buck) Anderson, died in 1936. Jim Buck married Annie (?). We don’t know much about Jim Buck’s family. Details are sketchy, but my Dad does remember him.
4.) Huey Markety Markwood Edward Lee Franc Anderson. (This is, I think, his full name.) He went by the name of Markwood. Markwood was born in 1871; he died in 1950. Markwood married Mary Jane Reese of Cardith, South Wales. Mary Jane was born in 1876 and died in 1935. They had several children:
a.) Hester or Esther or Hess ( born in 1899; married John Denzil McCammon). Hester and John had at least two children: Jack McCammon and Edward Lee (Bud) McCammon.
b.) Jesse, who married Jessie. Jesse and Jessie had two children: Marguerite (who married Carl Rogers) and Lois.
c.) Christina or Christine, born in 1898. She married Fred Collins.
d.) Reese, who married Gleda (?)
e.) Robert, who married Mildred.
f.) Huey (William H.?).
g.) Helen, who married Willard (aka, Fat) Webb.
5.) Sylvester (Ves) Anderson, born in 1878, died in 1910, in a mining accident. He married Nora.
a.) Mary Agnes Anderson?
b.) Gladys?, who married William (Bill) Poe
6.) Charles (Charley) Anderson, born in 1876, died in 1945. Charley married Jimmie (?), who was born in 1882.
a.) Wirt or Kirt Anderson, born 1899.
Many of Cole’s male children were coal miners, I think. All of Cole’s children, with the possible exception of Effie May Anderson, lived in Christian County, Kentucky, in 1900, according to the 1900 Census. In the early 1900s, Effie and Zeno; James and Annie; Sylvester and Nora; and Markwood and Mary moved to Sullivan County, Indiana. Fanny and Sam stayed in Kentucky. Charley’s family moved at some point to Central City, Illinois, which is near Centralia, Illinois.
There were at least two other Andersons that fit into this family, but I am not sure where. They are Gladys Anderson (who married William Poe) and Annie Anderson. They may have also been children of Cole. We know that Annie Anderson lived in Kentucky, while most of the rest of the family lived in Sullivan County, Indiana. Gladys and her husband William (Bill) Poe lived for a time in New York.
A Morrison family is also connected to my family, but I am not sure how they are related. In particular, a Belle Morrison is a part of this family, I think. Belle had a daughter who married a Goodman. This couple had a daughter named Mary Leona Goodman. This family lived in the city of Sullivan, Indiana, which is part of Sullivan County.
Cole was my great great grandfather. I descend through his daughter Effie May Anderson and her husband Zeno Tilden Stokes. My father (Dr. Jack Tilden Stokes) knew all of Cole’s children, plus many of their descendants. My father is willing to exchange information and recollections with any potential relative.
Jay T Stokes
(The great great grandson of Cole)
