In 1860 my great-grandfather Charles Newton Magill, born in Indiana was living in Decatur County, Iowa.Charles was living with Joseph and Mary (Johnson) Doze.Mary Johnson is the daughter of Calvin and Sarah (Magill) Johnson, who were also living in Decatur County, Iowa in 1860.I have been unable to find where Charles N. Magill is buried and don't know his birth date. From 1860 through 1880, Decatur County, Iowa census, Charles, gave his birth date as abt. 1831.Mt. Pleasant Asylum has him born abt. 1833.In the 1900 Atwood, Rawlins, Kansas census he said he was born November 1815.
Charles was committed to Mt. Pleasant asylum in 1878, Charles was released from the asylum abt. 1880 because of overcrowding. Charles was put in the Decatur County, "Poor Farm" after his wife Mary M. (Wilson) Magill died, but was returned to the asylum because of nearly burning down the "Poor Farm".Charles escaped from the asylum and wasn't heard from again for abt. 20 years.During the 20 years after he escaped the asylum he lived on a farm in Atwood, Rawlins, Kansas. He was afraid to let anyone know where he was because of fear of being returned to the asylum.Charles did very well for himself during those 20 years in Kansas and when he was old and his health was getting bad he asked a neighbor to help find his daughters if they were still alive.Charles, had livestock, and money in the bank and wanted his daughters to have it.
I believe Charles was born in Turman, Sullivan, Indiana.I believe he came to Decatur county, Iowa about 1853-54 with Calvin and Sarah (Magill) Johnson.Sarah (Magill) Johnson is the daughter of Charles Magill and Elizabeth (Lester) Magill.
If anyone lives in the area of Turman, Sullivan, Indiana and could help me figure out when Charles was born and who his parents were please email me.If he was born abt. 1815-17 then he could be the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Lester) Magill. If he was born abt. 1830-33 they mightstill be his parents or maybe his grandparents?????
