The St. Joseph's Orphan Asylum and Manual Labor School was located south of Lafayette. However, the area is now entirely within the city limits. It was located in the area between 4th Street and 9th Street, south of the Lafayette Country Club to Beck Lane.Lafayette Central Catholic High School and Bishop’s Wood park are the only parts that are still owned by the Catholic Church.
The orphanage closed in the mid-1930s, however, the priest who headed it, Fr. Freiberger, continued to run the alumni association until his death in the early 1950’s.
I did some research on the orphanage several years ago.I received excellent help from the diocesan archivist. They may be able to help you locate your relatives. You can contact the Diocese of Lafayette at 612 Lingle Avenue, Lafayette IN 47902. (765) 742-4852.
