John and Michael SHANAHAN arrived in Wabash County, Indiana circa 1830. Both married and had large families who intermarried into local family groups.
John SHANAHAN married Johanna TORPHY or TORPY. Micheal SHANAHAN married Lydia OZENBAUGH.
William Shanahan, youngest of the known SHANAHAN brothers arrived in Indiana around 1840. William SHANAHAN married Mary MORAN.
One sister, Mary SHANAHAN and her husband, Michael JORDAN arrived in America from the SHANAHAN home in Charleville, County Cork, Ireland circa 1850 and after a short stay, this branch of the family moved to Hannibal, Missouri.
Patrick SHANAHAN, A SHANAHAN family relative, relationship unknown, also came to Wabash County in the mid-1800s. He married Honora Barrett and remained in the area, also raising a large family.
All of these family groups may have worked on the Wabash and Erie Canal as it moved westward from Fort Wayne, Indiana. They all farmed in and around the village of LaGro, Indiana, not far from the City of Wabash, the capitol of Wabash County, Indiana.
There are numerous descendants of these families with branches in the States of Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Michigan and Ohio.
