From a document written in 1960's by a great-great grandson of Moses Thompson, father to John C Thompson who first married Amanda Garriott and lived out their lives in the LittleYork/Gibson area of Washington Co IN...
"Moses Thompson made an exploratory trip to this area in 1809, secures some land, returned to Kentucky, to return to Indiana with his family in 1812.My grandfather, Moses Benton Thompson, told me during the Centennial Celebration of Salem in 1914, that he recalled his grandfather, Moses, telling him of helping lay out the townsight of Salem, Indiana. That some joker cut about four inches off the grape vine that was used for measuring, therefore all property lines in Salem are wrong.
"Later, Moses with John C. and perhaps others of his sons, moved to Carroll County, Indiana, where they had the contract to clear the townsight of Delphi. They bought land a few miles East of Delphi.Moses was born in 1789, where (?) Died in 1852.I went through all the issues of the Delphi Journal in the State Library from founding through 1852-53 and could find no mention of any of the family. There were no obituaries in those days."
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THE STORY ABOUT THE GRAPEVINES IS TRUE?
And, if anyone wants to converse about these Thompsons, the Garriotts, Blankenbakers and Vaughns.. write.
