You are correct that those Snyders are Mary’s parents and sister. The 1850 census of Brownsville Township, Union County, lists John M. & Mary Ann Snyder, ages 28 & 25, and children Mary M. (age 3), and Oliver T. (age 3/12).The 1860 census of Abington Township, Wayne County, lists John & Polly A. Snider, ages 38 & 35, and children Malissa (age 13), Oliver (age 10) and Martha (age 8).
The Snyder family of Union and Wayne County married into the Stevens family several times (and vice versa). My 3rd great grandmother was a Snyder (Wright F. Stevens, son of William Stevens, son of Spencer Stevens 1769-1839, married Celia Snyder), and so I am researching the Snyder family also.Michael Snyder who married Nancy Summers and was the father of John M. Snyder was the son of Michael Joshua & Eve (Ely) Snyder, my 5th great grandparents, who migrated to Wayne County from Lee County, Virginia in 1807.There are several biographies of various members of this Snyder family in Union and Wayne County history books; a bio of John M. Snyder, from History of Wayne County, Indiana, 1884, reads:
“J. M. Snyder was born in Union County, Ind., in 1821, a son of Michael and Nancy (Summers) Snyder. His grandparents, Michael and Eve (Ely) Snyder, came to Indiana in 1807 and settled in Brownsville Township, Union county. They had a family of nine children – Michael, Betsey, Moses, David, Isaac, Simon, Applebury, Ethel and Polly.Michael Jr., was fourteen years of age when his parents came to Indiana. He married Nancy, daughter of Simon Summers. To them were born four children – Eliza, Simon, John M., and Sarah E.His wife died in 1825, and he subsequently married Rachel (Summers) Dawson, a sister of his first wife. They had eight children – Rhoda, Eva, Mary, Daniel, Michael, George, Andrew and Willie.Mr. Snyder died in 1877, aged eighty-three years. Our subject, J.M. Snyder, was reared on a farm and has always followed that occupation. In 1853 he came to Wayne County and rented land in Abington Township for years. He then moved to Fayette County, but two years later settled on the farm where he now resides, buying at that time eighty acres. He now owns 120 acres of well-improved land.He married Mary Ann, daughter of William H. Thomas. They have three children – Mary M., Oliver T., and Mattie.Mr. and Mrs. Snyder are members of the Christian church.”
