Bruce, I know that this is a late reply to your 2010 post but I hope it still finds you.Michael and Mary Ann were my ggg-grandparents. You mentioned a reference to Michael's OBIT, I would be very interested in reading it,Can you tell me where I might find it?And I'm wondering if you happen to know if Michael's parents were Michael and Catherine Gonter from Jackson, Will County, Illinois.
I believe Mary Ann Davis to have married a Shelley and born two children before marrying Michael Gonter, but I haven't any proof of that, just speculation due to the Census records.
below is an article I found regarding Mary Ann's death:
Mary Ann GONTER The following clipping from the Madison (Kansas) News will be of interest to many people of Jackson and also of Joliet, Mr. GONTER at one time running the candy store and restaurant now operated by SCHEIDT of Jefferson street, Joliet: Mary Ann GONTER died at her home in Madison on Tuesday afternoon December 29, 1896, aged 66 years, 10 months and 21 days after an illness extending back over forty years. She bore her terrible suffering with patience and fortitude and during her last days was conscious that the end was near and had many times signified her willingness to leave the world where for many years had continued for her nothing but never-ending pain. She was a member of no church but had been early taught the Christian way, and, although unable to attend church for many years, she has lived a Christian life, her preference being the M. E. church. She leaves a husband and eight children, all grown, to mourn the loss of a loving wife and mother. Funeral services were conducted at the residence Wednesday afternoon by Rev. J.W. FUNK of the Presbyterian church and Rev. W. EMERSON of the M.E. church and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at No. 8. Those who knew the deceased best fully believe that she now contemplates her husband and children with pitying tenderness from those realms of bliss to which her pure spirit has flown.
