I’ve been trying to find the parents of Reuben Compton of Virginia who was born in 1804 and diedbetween 1880 and 1900. (For simplicity I will refer to him as “my Reuben”.) He married Ann R. (Nancy) Farmer in 1829 and they lived in Pittsylvania and Halifax counties at various times according the census records from 1830 through 1880. They had about 9 children, the oldest of which was my gg-grandfather, David Reuben (D.R.) Compton.
D.R., who was also known as Reuben Jr., was born in 1830 and died in 1896. He moved to Tennessee in 1850 and married Tabitha Lax in 1853. They had 6 children and later moved to Arkansas where Tabitha died in 1879. He then married Bernie Neal and had 3 more children, the oldest of which was my g-grandfather Reuben Hamblet Compton.
Finding my Reuben’s parents has been complicated by the fact that there was a Reuben D. Compton also born around 1800 in Virginia. Reuben D. married a Nancy Morton there in 1822, moved to Kentucky and had 6 children. Reuben D. has often been confused with my Reuben because they were both born in Virginia around the same time and both married women named Nancy. Reuben D. has also been confused with David Reuben because they both have the same initials, though in a different order.
All of the above is clearly documented in various census and other records available online.
Going back one generation is where the confusion sets in. Most of the information I have found prior to 1800 is from unsourced family trees posted on line. Many of these have clearly confused the generations of Reubens and their wives. Here we find several referenced to another Reuben Compton who was born around 1762 in Amelia, Virginia, reportedly the son of John William Compton and Elizabeth Mundy. This Reuben married a woman who’s surname may have been Anderson. They reportedly had 4 children, the youngest of which may have been either my Reuben or the ReubenD. mentioned above.
Among John William and Elizabeth’s other children was another son, Richard, who is also reported in some unsourced trees to have had a son named Reuben or Reuben D. around 1804. There was also a son Joel who had a grandson named Reuben born around 1807 in Kentucky.
So I still don’t know who my Reuben’s parents were.Any help or comments would be appreciated. Source citations are even better.
