Linda, very helpful, thanks. At best, I'm a dilettante at genealogy, but I'm asking for a subscription to Ancestry.com for my birthday. It seems like it's always a good tactic to type alternate spellings just to see.My last name's Eagan, but I found ancestors (as recent as my grandfather) recorded in the census as "Egan".
Oh, and for anyone who's interested or has info, the Quere (Guere?) to Eagan line goes like this:
Seraphine Bonet Quere (born Cuba, died LA) Armand Quere (born LA, died LA), her son Emilia Quere Hardy (born LA, died LA), his daughter Ruth Mae Hardy Farrell (born LA, died LA), her daughter Jean Marie Farrell Eagan (born New Orleans, died New Orleans, LA), her daughter
Jean Marie Farrell Eagan was my grandmother. We're the Eagans who own the Leitz-Eagan funeral home and Eagan insurance agency in New Orleans, LA.
