He lived for twenty years in New Orleans and there had large cotton mills. He made a fortune in shipping cotton and later located permanently in Richmond, Virginia, where he was held in great esteem as a citizen. His wife was Rosalie Bradfute, a descendant of Colonel Byrd, of Virginia, and they had ten children.
