In a newspaper article, Roy stated that he and Barbara argued over his plans to marry a Mexican prostitute. He said he came home and found the bodies and took them out to the swamp because he thought that he would be blamed for the murders, but that he didn't think that he killed them. He was ruled sane to stand trial.
He was convicted of Brenda's death and sentenced to be executed, but in 1972 the death penalty was ruled unConstitutional. He was still on Death Row at Angola as of December 1976.
In 1980 he was released off of Death Row into the general population of the prison and in 1983 he was resentenced to life imprisonment.
