I've traced my Wood ancestry to Obadiah Wood of Nantucket b Feb 28 1756 d July 1825, but am stuck there. He was married to Martha Tupper of Nantucket. According to the Barney Genealogy, this Obadiah was from New Jersey but there is no mention of his parents.
I've only been researching online, and I am an amateur. I have read about Obadiah of Ipswich, son of Edward of England and brother of Thomas. It seems possible that one of the sons of Obadiah and Margaret Sparks could be an ancestor of the Nantucket Obadiah, but I can't find any New Jersey connection.
I've also read about John Wood>Jonathan Wood>Obadiah Wood (b 1700) of Queens New York and CT. This Obadiah has one listed son, Lemuel b 1729, whose son Obadiah was christened in 1766. I don't think this is my ancestor, because the child was christened in Connecticut and would have been 10 at the time, but who knows.
Here's what I know:
Obadiah Wood>Obed Wood born May 7 1788 in Nantucket. Obed is the father of Charles A. Wood b July 27, 1817 in New Bedford. He was my great-grandfather x 3 and the founder c 1839 of the Wood & Bishop stove company of Bangor, ME.
Any information about an Obadiah Wood from New Jersey (or my ancestor, who owned a dry goods store on India Street in Nantucket) would be most appreciated!
