Paul, Been having the same problem with the Layfields. My husbands Grandmother was a Layfield and ancestors where from Somerset Co. MD. The best success at the moment is through http://searchfamily.org You can find may Layfields in North America: MD, GA and CT and in England as well. My Grandmother has paper clippings and photos and I can go back to the 1800's, but she also has documents of Layfields in the 1700's, 1600's and 1500's but trying to connect it all. Hopefully I'm not wasting my time, but sure is interesting who ever they are. As far as I can go that I have documents on is William W Layfield who was a captain of a sail vessel married a Miss Montgomery of Virginia. They had 11 children according to a letter that was written in 1941. I can account for 9 of those children. One that was not named I found through family search. This group is the 1800's. Then there is a group of Layfields1700's - George Layfield and Elizabeth Unknown maiden name, had six children that I found through the internet. Don't know if there is a connection there. Then there is the Layfield 1600's - Samuel Layfield and Mary Layfield. They had two children Thomas and Mary Layfield. Had a brother George Layfield and there mother was Margaret Nottle. This information I got was a copy of Samuel Layfield's will dated 5/25/1709 - don't know the connection there either. Plus a book called Old Somerset on the Eastern Shore of Maryland that confirms this will. Then there is the Layfield 1600 - 1500's. There are copiesfrom a book that I don't know, but dated July 12, 1924 Notes and Queries section. I have found an Edward Layfield died 1583 in England, his son John Layfield and history I found on the Internet all match what I have here! But don't know the connection yet. To many pieces missing. Must go to Maryland (we go there a bit) to visit cemetaries and maybe that will help. All these people I have mention has lived in Somerset Co. Maryland and Talbot Co. Hope this helps you out.
