I'M GOING TO BE PRETTY MUCH OFF THE NET FOR THE SUMMER IN A FEW DAYS BUT PERHAPS I CAN MAKE SOME SUGGESTIONS.
Thanks for your reply. THANKS FOR THE THANKS!
I really don't have much more information than I posted. I know my next step is to find his parent's names. THAT MIGHT BE A REAL STRUGGLE JUST BY SEARCHING FOR HIS BIRTH RECORD WITHOUT A GOOD NAME OR PLACE AND PERHAPS NOT A GOOD DATE. BY 1894 MOST, BUT STLL NOT, BIRTHS WERE RECORDED.DEATH RECORDS CAN BE TERRIBLE-THE DATE IS MORE LIKELY TO BE RIGHT THAN THE PLACE.AN EXTREME EXAMPLE IS ONE I KNOW OF THAT DIED IN THE 1940S 50 MILES FROM WHERE WAS BORN AND THE RECORD HAS A PLACE ALMOST 1000MILES AWAY.CENSUS RECORDS ARE OFTEN WRONG BUT IF YOU GET MAINE ON A COUPLE IT'S LIKELY HE WAS BORN IN MAINE
I have his death certificate and it says he was born on 2/17/1894 in Portland, Maine. Unfortunately, it does have his parents names. It has "Unknown" in both spaces. He died in 1956 and said he was 62, which of course, "adds up". IN 1894 PORTLAND WAS BOOMING, HUGE GROWTH, TAKE THIS, AT BEST, "PORTLAND AREA".
My Father's birth certificate also says he was born on Maine but was 37 in 1937, which would put his birth year in 1900, which I think is a mistake. BIRTHS ARE A STRESSFUL TIME, NOT AS STRESSFUL AS DEATHS-SOMEONE GOT CONFUSED THAT'S ALL.WHAT'S MORE IMPORTANT IS THE REST OF THE INFORMATION.I WOULD EXPECT IT WOULD HAVE THE MOTHER'S NAME, PLACE OF BIRTH, AND THE SAME FOR MONTY.
TRACE HIM BACK!A MARRIAGE RECORD IS THE BEST RECORD. CONNECT AS MANY DOTS AS YOU CAN! YOUR FATHER'S MARRIAGE RECORD WOULD HAVE CLUES TOO (SON OF..., BORN..., AND SAME FOR HIS MOTHER) YOU MIGHT PICK UP A CHANGE IN HIS NAME AS WELL AS A PLACE OF BIRTH.
I know he was in Denver, Colorado in 1940, found this in the census. His age in that was noted as 46, which would make his birth year 1894 which matches his death certificate.SO 1894ISH LOOKS GOOD.
I have also thought that he might have changed his name, either all of or parts of it. I looked through the complete 1900 census for Portland and South Portland on Ancestry and couldn't find him. PARENTS OFF AT WORK AND COUNTED IN ANOTHER FAMILY PERHAPS? MOVING FROM ONE RENT TO ANOTHER, PEOPLE WERE MISSED!
PEOPLE DID CHANGE THEIR NAMES BUT IT'S A LOT MORE LIKELY JUST USING A NICKNAME.
WORK YOUR WAY BACK RATHER THAN JUMP.IF YOU HAVE ANCESTRY YOU HAVE BETTER RECORDS THAN I HAVE. YOU SHOULD HAVE PRETTY MUCH THE TOOLS JUST USE THEM A LITTLE BETTER.
READING PORTLAND ETC. MUST HAVE BEEN TOUGH!
I have contacted the Maine State Archives and they said they would look if they could find a birth certificate going on what I have. I don't have high hopes for this because of the quality of information I have.
I have gotten just about all the information I can out of my father that I can, he is not doing well and can't remember things as well as I would hope.
