Theodore Oliver Kohtala
NIAGARA, Wis. -- Theodore Oliver Kohtala, 93, died Sunday, March 15, 2009, at Maryhill Manor in Niagara.
He was born Sept. 20, 1915, in Redridge, Mich., the son of George and Anne (Moilanen) Kohtala. Ted served with the U.S. Army for more than four years. He fought in the Tunisian, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Po Valley, and No Appennienes campaigns. Ted was wounded in action and awarded the Purple Heart. He spoke often of his service years and was a proud veteran of the 1st Armored Division.
Ted married Anne Maki on Feb. 2, 1946, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 18, 1989. They lived most of their lives together on their homestead on Trout Creek, Mich., where Ted retired after 30 years with the U.S. Forest Service at Ottawa National Forest.
He was a member of the Trout Creek American Legion, and the Ewen Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his son, Steven (Roberta) Kohtala of Pembine; grandson, Tyler Kohtala of DePere; son in law, Steven King of Kenton, Mich.; granddaughter, Kristen King of Kenton; grandson, Todd (Heather) King of Green Bay; and great-grandsons, Joshua and Kaleb King of Green Bay.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Phyllis King' his sister, Helmi Kangas; and his brother, Ray Kohtala.
Visitation will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Trout Creek on Saturday at 10 a.m., with a funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. The Rev. Wallace Leno will officiate.

TROUT CREEK - Helmi Kangas, 87, of Trout Creek, died on Saturday, January 8, 2005, in Ontonagon.
She was born on May 7, 1917 in Redridge, daughter of the late George and Anna (Moilanen) Kohtala. She attended Trout Creek High School where she graduated in 1939.
Helmi married Ernest Kangas in 1939 in Detroit and he preceded her in death on April 22, 1997.
Helmi is survived by a son, Jim of Flint; a brother, Theodore Kohtala of Trout Creek and Dunbar, Wis.; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert; and a brother, Ray.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. EST on Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at the Wandersee Funeral Home in Bruce Crossing with Rev. Leon Linquist officiating. Interment will be in the Trout Creek Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. EST until the time of service.
Memorials may be made to the Ontonagon Memorial Hospital, Long Term Care Unit.
