ISHPEMING — Donald George Kohtala, 76, of 133 Sunnyside Estates, Ishpeming, passed away Monday, January 13, 2003 at Bell Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for one week. Donald was born February 8, 1926 in Pequaming to the late William and Selma (Pumela) Kohtala. Donald lived in Chassell during his childhood years where he attended Chassell Township Schools. He served in India and China in the Army Air Corp during WW II; also served in the infantry and military police as a Sergeant of the Guard during the Korean War. Donald was a member of Hope Free Evangelical Lutheran Church and a life member of the Ishpeming VFW Post 4573. In Donald’s younger years, he enjoyed bowling; was a founding member of the Ishpeming Twilight Horseshoe League, and was an Ishpeming Township Little League coach. Most recently, Donald enjoyed bike riding, cards, pool and taking saunas. Donald was employed by C.C.I. Mining Company for 25 years, Inland Steel for nine years working at the Morris Mine, and also worked at the Calumet & Hecla mines in Calumet. Donald was the beloved husband of Eva (Pyykkonen) Kohtala for 51 years and loving father of four children, David (Sarah) Kohtala of Appleton, Wis., John (Jean) Kohtala of Ishpeming, Daniel Kohtala of Negaunee and Donna (Lawrence) Vincent of Newberry, Mich.; Papa to nine grandchildren, Jesse, Melissa, Andrew, Luke, Elizabeth, Laura, Seth, Monica and Hannah Kohtala. Also survived by sisters, Lempi (Eino) Sarja of Twin Lakes, Irene (Robert) Byykkonen of Ishpeming and Florence (Albert) Pesola of Twin Lakes; an aunt, Viola Kohtala of Chassell; and numerous nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by a sister, Julie (Joel) Marttila; brothers, Wesley, William, Elmer and Ernest Kohtala; and daughter-in-law, Judy Kohtala. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 16, 2003, at Hope Free Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ishpeming with Rev. Michael Burke officiating. Burial will take place in Chassell Cemetery in the spring. Friends may call Thursday from 12 noon until 2 p.m. at Hope Free Evangelical Lutheran Church where the Ishpeming VFW will hold a memorial service at 1:15 p.m. Donald’s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
