Your frustration is common. St. Hyacinth, St. Norbert and St. James are the parishes you hope your relatives belonged to when you need to get records.
My only suggestion is to call in the early evening when Father answers the phone himself. Let him know of your frustration and ask for his advice.
The reason they're "stand-offish" is because it's tedious work and only one person there enjoys going through the books. The handwriting is horrible, even though the language is Latin it looks like Russian. I've had luck asking them just to verify that they have the records and photocopying that passage, rather than typing up a certificate.
Whatever you do, don't send money with your request. Just tell them that you'd like the lookups so that you can request a mass for the person/people you're researching, then send an honorarium for a mass when you're done.
