Thank you to the many people who have helped fill in some long-time black holes.Going further back it looks like:
Calvin Shepard (1799-1848) & Jane Dempsey (1804-1885), both born Schoharie Co, NY, may have been parents of John S. Shepard (1826-1896) of Argentine Twp, Genessee County, MI.They would have migrated to Michigan from (Caneadea?) Allegany Co, NY c.1839-1843 when the Byron-Gaines area was being settled. The record is unclear & this is the link I am most interested in.
John Shepherd is listed as son of a Jane Shepherd in the 1850 census for Argentine Twp, and a Jane Austin is listed as living “with son” in the 1870 and 1880 census. Jane Dempsey is known to have been married to Calvin Sheppard/Shepherd, then on 22 Jan 1854 to William Austin Jr, all of whom are buried at Byron (MI) Cemetary.
Calvin & Jane's children may have been: 1. Asa Shepard (1825-) m. Lovina Lucinda Bostwick (1849-) [7 children--This line, especialy of son Braziliel Rudd Shepard, researched by K.Bane & others] 2. John S (1826-1896) 2m. Mary Elizabeth Norris (1939-1912)[8 children--my line] 3. Evelinda (1830-1912) m. William Henry Borst (1931-) [at least 1 child] 4. A.W.Curtis (1831-1932) m. Roxy Ette Austin (1840-) [4 children] 5. Julia (1833-) 6. Catherine “Viola” (1838-1863/70) 7. Lucy (1843-1868) m. Rufus Atherton (1828-1899) [4 children?] (Rufus son of Asahel Atherton? 2m. Jane?)
* Ephraim Shepard (1820-1873) m. Ellen, also are buried at Byron Cemetary, listed in census at Argentine Twp 1850-70, (6 children) connection unclear.
