Jonathan Austin Wheeler-- early reporter for Kazoo Gazette from Alamo
My Greatgreatgrandfather was Jonathan Austin Wheeler born in Ontario, Canada in 1834.His father's name was John B. Wheeler and his mother was Charlotte Austin.
This Wheeler family emigrated sometime in 1839 from Woodhouse, Norfolk Township, Ontario Canada. At first they stayed in Oswego/Otsego?By 1835 John B. took out a Land Patend on quite a few acres in Alamo township, Kalamazoo county, Michigan.
The family took residence in what at the time was a big forrested wilderness. At that time the city of Kalamazoo was just a village and must have seemed enormous, for they were 15 miles plus from there.
Jonathan Wheeler had a brother named John B. Wheeler who fought in the Civil War.
Jonothan Wheeler was a poet of some reknown, he was called The Garden Poet.He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Jonathan Wheeler was the Alamo coorespondent for The Kalamazoo Gazette, probably for all of the last half ofthe 1800's minus a year or two.
Jonathon A. Wheeler died early in the 1900's.He continued to be a news coorespondent until a few months before his death.
He had many daughters, but never a son.
Anyone, does anyone know anything about this greatly loved,
Alamo Resident?
All things required and appreciated.
Gail Moore Boyd
Greatgreatgranddaughter of Jonathan Austin Wheeler
