Roswell was not an uncommon name in the late 1700s, but I haven’t found “tons”of people with it.It is common in the Slack family from NY.Below are the Roswells I have found, and their connection to each other.Does anyone have a Roswell or Russell in their Slack line? I’d like to hear from you.
Roswell Slack, born about 1774 (an estimate based on census), died 1818 NY, son of Benajah (1).
Roswell Slack Jr, born between 1800 and 1810, probably NY died 1821 probably NY, son of Roswell [Benajah (1)].
Roswell Slack born about 1790 NY, son of William [Benajah (1)]. He is listed in the 1850 census, Middletown, Delaware, NY, age 60, name spelled Rowsel. He is listed in the 1880 census Damascus, Wayne, NY age 92, in household of a son.Name transcribed as Russell.
Roswell Slack, born about 1790, died 1879 Oshtemo, Kalamazoo, MI son of Benajah (2).
Roswell Slack Jr, born 1830, NY, possibly Monroe Co, died 1906, Hartford, VanBuren,MI, son of Roswell [Benajah2]
Roswell Slack, born 1832 Lake Pleasant, Hamilton, NY, died 1909 probably Lake Pleasant, NY, son of Nathan [William, Benajah (1)].
Roswell Slack, born about 1860 MI, son of Magness D. [James, Benajah (2)]
Roswell Slacke 1820 census of Sterling, Cayuga, NY (3)
Roswell Slack 1830 census Greece, Monroe, NY (3)
There was a Roswell Slack in Cayuga Co, NY, married Millie Ogden, no other information (3)
Benajah (1) died in Montgomery Co , now Perth, Fulton, NY 1818.He may be the Benajah who was born in Westerly, Washington, RI 1733 but there is no proof.According to his will he had a son Benajah.
Benajah (2) lived in Johnstown, Montgomery, now Fulton, NY.He may have been a son or grandson of Benajah(1), but there is no proof. The use of the name Roswell among his descendants makes me think there was a connection.
(3) My guess is that there is a connection between these three, they may even be the same person.
