Israel CURTIS, b ca 1777 was the first sheriff of Cattaraugus County NY. According to the Cattaraugus Co. History book, he and his family "removed to the Far West" in 1826. He and his wife, Thankful (BIRDZELL) CURTIS, moved with their 8 children to Macomb County, where Israel was a Justice of the Peace. Their daughter Apphia, b 1804 Cayuga Co. NY, married in 1828 to Thomas CURTIS, b 1803 in Canada. Perhaps they were cousins? Thomas and Apphia moved with their children to Minnesota before 1856. Other family members lived in Janesville WI. Israel is descended from Thomas CURTIS, b 1598 England, who settled in Wethersfield, CT.
