An Oakland County boy was bound out between 1785-1800 by his family in New York. He later moved to Michigan, where he died in Orion, Oakland County on 3 Sep 1877, at the age of 92.
Where were records kept on children being "bound out" in the late 1700s? Where would we look for any records of Asa A. Owen (a minor) being "bound out," to another family as a young child, supposedly from Orange Co, NY to Wayne Co, PA?
I understand there were few birth records kept in those days. Asa A. Owen was born 15 Feb 1785 in Goshen, Orange Co, NY. I received Asa's death certificate from Oakland Co., MI in the mail last week, however, there was no mention of his parents. They were deceased, but shouldn't they still be listed, just for the record?
We are looking for any information on our Unknown Owen, his wife and their parents. Mr. Owen was killed by Native American Indians before 1800. His son, Asa A. Owen, was then "bound out" as a young boy until he was 21 years old.
Our brick wall is our missing Unknown Owen (b. ?, m. ?, d . ?), his wife, and their unknown parents. We hope there may be clues within Asa's records.
Mr. Owen's daughter, Sarah, named one of her sons John Owen Thacker. I believe that her father may have been named John Owen. There were quite a few John Owen's in New York then, so I am having a difficult time. One possibility may be the John Owen who married Eleanor Crandell. All I have found on them is their recorded marriage - their children, if any, have not been found (to my knowledge).
According to a Family Bible, Mr. Owen had six children:
William, b. 22 Feb 1774; Sarah, b. 17 Jul 1776, m. 31 Dec 1794 in NY (married Townsend Thacker, b. 2 Mar 1768, d. 5 Jan 1849), Sarah d. 24 Nov 1870 in Defiance Co, OH; Polly, b. 9 Aug 1779; Phoebe, b. 2 Apr 1781; Joseph, b. 6 Nov 1783, d. after 1870 in OH; and Asa A. Owen, b. 15 Feb 1785 in Goshen, Orange Co, NY, d. 3 Sep 1877 in Orion, Oakland Co, MI.
According to family records, Asa A. Owen married Lucinda Corwin at Damascus, Wayne Co., PA on 3 May 1814 and they had six children: Polly (married Eli Welch), Eliza Ann, Cyrus, William, Amanda L. (married James L. Bird) and Alfred J. Owen.
According to the published histories of Oakland Co, MI, the Asa A. Owen family, along with the families of Elijah B. Clark (married Mary Ann Yerkes), and Jesse Decker (wife unknown), settled in Orion Township, Oakland Co., MI, in 1831. Lucinda C. Owen died there on July 30, 1838. On April 15, 1841, Asa A. Owen married Martha Travis and they had three children: Asa W., Sarah W., and Jason T. Owen.
The same source reports that Asa A. Owen’s father was killed by Native Americans when he was a very young boy and that Asa was “bound out” to another family until the age of twenty-one, and that Asa A. Owen later served in the War of 1812 in PA, though I have not found those military records as of yet.
A sizeable reward for the true identity of Asa A. Owen's father will be paid to the first person who can provide this information. Any other helpful information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
