Searching for the family of Holland Merritt (b. VT) and Caroline Drake (who was born at Crown Point, Essex county, New York on 6 June 1814, the daughter of Joseph Drake and his wife Caroline [maiden name unknown]). This couple resided in New York in 1830, 1850 and 1860 and, apparently, Pennsylvania around 1840, where their son Joseph J. Merritt was supposedly born on 25 April 1840. The Merritt family later returned to New York, possibly residing at Le Roy, Genessee county, NY, which is probably why Joseph put this down in his civil war record as being his birthplace (whereas he consistently reports his birthplace as PA in all census records so far discovered and examined). Joseph married Lucretia Sabin Wakefield at Hopkinton, St Lawrence county, NY, moving by 1874 to Ontonagon, Michigan, where their daughter, Elva L. Merritt's birth was registered as having taken place on 13 March 1874. The Merritt family later moved on to Wisconsin where they lived for more than a decade. Joseph's mother, Caroline (Drake) Merritt lived in Melrose, Jackson county, Wisconsin where she died on 8 April 1877. She was buried in Little Falls cemetery, near Melrose (information from her death certificate). It is not known where her husband Holland died, but their son Joseph J. Merritt (1840-1910) and his wife and 7 children, moved to Canada in October 1888, settling in Rossburn township, Manitoba where he was naturalised a British subject in 1900.
